Recently, it was reported that a Judge in a District Court in the US - a district court is a local court of law that handles the first hearing of a case. It is where a trial starts. A judge looks at the facts, listens to both sides, and decides the outcome for criminal and civil cases within a specific area - dismissed criminal charges against a foreign national, Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, after the justice department said it had decided to abandon the fraud and bribery case.
Does this sound erriely similar to what we have?
Replace the foreign national with a high power politician.
Prior to granting the federal prosecutors’ application withdraw their case, the Judge inquired from the prosecutors their reasons for doing so, including by asking Adani whether anything was promised in exchange for the dropping of the case.
In November 2024, before the charges were formally recorded, Adani had promised to invest US$10 billion in the United States.
Adani was charged in 2024 with agreeing to bribe Indian government officials so a subsidiary of his Adani Group could win approval to develop a solar energy plant, then misleading US investors by providing reassuring information about his company’s anti-corruption practices.
On 18 May 2026, the justice department announced it would no longer pursue the case.
Another instance of errie similarity happened in Malaysia.
The Judge apparently asked the justice department to justify its decision to drop the charges, writing that its “bland and conclusory” announcement did not give him enough information for which, in a court filing, the justice department said the case was primarily foreign, hard to prove and inconsistent with the agency’s current priorities.
After reading this, I no longer feel bad and question the system we have.
It is NOT a `Malaysia Boleh’ moment.
