Anwar asking Malaysians to fly the Jalur Gemilang to welcome August 31 and show our love for the country reminds me of a spouse who lies to you, belittles you, disrespects you and squanders your hard earned money, but then asks you to write them a loving message for their birthday on social media, for the sake of your marriage.
You know they don’t care about your marriage. If they did, they wouldn’t have done all the things that they did. You know that they just care about themselves. They are just using your marriage as a means to further indulge themselves.
You want to divorce them, but you can’t. You have invested too much of yourself in your relationship, that you are too entangled with them. If you divorce them, you don’t know who you will be anymore.
Once upon a time ago, you declared that you love them and promised that you will be with them through thick and thin. They said the same thing to you too.
Later you realise that you are the only one who meant what you said. They just said what they said to get what they wanted.
Now you are in a predicament.
If you do as they do and treat your promises and declarations as meaningless words, you will be just like them, which you don’t want to be, because after all that they have done to you, the last thing you want to be is just like them.
But if you don’t become like them and disregard all your declarations and promises, you will be forever stuck with them feeling like a fool. They will step all over you, while you will be condemned to post loving messages to them on Instagram and Facebook.
You are damned if you do and damned if you don’t.
This is why I have always believed in putting our faith in values rather than leaders.
It is better to put our faith on those who are consistent, who are truthful and who keep things simple, even if you disagree with them or even if they are on the opposing side, than it is to trust someone who just says sweet things we want to hear, although they keep u-turning on their promises, disregard the truth and make even the simplest things complicated.
A virtuous spouse who is confident enough of their love towards you to give you difficult advise for the sake of your marriage is much better than a self-absorbed one who just says whatever you want to hear without meaning a single word they say, because the only thing they care about is themselves and what they can get from you.
A good spouse is a treasure whose value grows with time.
A bad spouse is a debt trap. The longer you have them, the worse off you become.
