You Must Not Object or UMNO.
It has dawned on Malaysians that politicians can no longer noose and mislead them.
The veil of mistrust they hide behind is slowly becoming transparent with present-day technology and people can now see through the games politicians play.
GE 15, another expression of the Rakyat’s suspicions of our leaders or rather ‘ambiguous dealers’ have purpled their fingers in indelible ink to point them to the exit and welcome those they trust to lead.
An unbelievable 70% turnout of voters have braved the sudden call for voting which was a definite ploy by some politicians for a lesser turnout to win.
The Bravehearts have in droves etched their Xs on ballot papers travelling near and afar, defying the weather, floods and other extremities devised by the failed leadership trying to impede them from exercising their rights.
In this hour ‘A Hung Parliament and A Coalition Government’ have become common household expressions but on the other hand, a storm is brewing in UMNO.
The top brasses in UMNO were summoned to exit by the younger leaders and this is the second time the bell has tolled with this clear and pertinent call in the last 12 hours.
As I write this, I am watching on TV, the serious cries from the young UMNO members at their headquarters urging their leaders to resign.
UMNO and Some History
The nationalist party UMNO was formed in Johor Bahru on 10 May 1946 and Datuk Onn Jaafar was elected to lead and oppose the Malayan Union but continued to support the British to defeat the communist insurgency.
In 1949, after the Malayan Union had been replaced by the Federation of Malaya, UMNO became political and focused on governance. UMNO in government served all races once they led the country.
Tunku Abdul Rahman became president of UMNO after Dato' Onn left the organisation because he failed to convince UMNO that all races should be allowed to become members.
Datuk Onn Jaafar went on to form the Independence of Malaya Party (IMP) which was defeated by UMNO during municipal elections after UMNO formed a coalition with MCA giving rise to an alliance or the beginning of the National Front.
In 1954, the Alliance won 226 of the 268 seats during the state elections and in the same year a Federal Legislative Council was formed which comprised 100 seats, out of which 52 were to be elected, and 48 were appointed by the British High Commissioner.
The Alliance demanded 60 seats to be elected, but the British refused.
In 1955, the Alliance, which had now included the Malayan Indian Congress, began maturing as a political organisation with a manifesto aiming for independence.
The Alliance had won 51 of the 52 seats contested, with the other seat going to PAS (the Pan-Malayan Islamic Party, a group of Islamists that split from UMNO).
Tunku became the first Chief Minister of Malaya.
It is certain that UMNO, an organisation that had a clear interest in the country’s well-being was instrumental in achieving independence and good governance in the earlier years.
