Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian kopitiam chain Oriental Kopi has apologised after facing criticism on social media over its menus featuring English and Chinese but not Bahasa Melayu.
The issue gained attention after photographs of the menus circulated on Threads, with some users questioning the absence of the national language and calling for a boycott until changes were made.
Some users argued that a Malaysian brand should include Bahasa Melayu in its menus, while others questioned why Oriental Kopi was being singled out when other food and beverage chains also use menus without the national language.
Oriental Kopi founder Calvin Chan acknowledged the shortcoming and apologised, saying the company respected Bahasa Melayu as Malaysia’s national language and would take the feedback into consideration.
In a further response on his Threads account, Chan said the company was working on a new menu design that would include Bahasa Malaysia, adding that Oriental Kopi served Malaysians regardless of race or background.
