Oscar-winning songwriter Glen Hansard killed in crash aged 56

  • Irish musician and actor Glen Hansard, aged 56, has died following a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in the west of Dublin.
  • Hansard, who won the Best Original Song Oscar in 2008 for the hit indie film Once, was pronounced dead at the scene in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 29 July.
  • Irish police confirmed that a man in his 50s died in the collision, with emergency services being alerted shortly before 4.30am.
  • Before achieving international fame with Once, Hansard emerged from Dublin’s busking scene and formed his band, The Frames. The actor also starred in hit film The Commitments in 1991.
