Deputy Inspector-General reveals 1,429 officers faced sanctions last year, with 134 dismissed, as force vows zero tolerance on misconduct.
GEORGE TOWN: A total of 1,429 Royal Malaysia Police officers and personnel faced disciplinary action throughout last year.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay confirmed the figure, which included 134 dismissals.
He stated the force would never compromise on any member found guilty of an offence. Firm action was essential to maintain the integrity of PDRM, he told reporters after a forum.
Of those sanctioned, 819 were given warnings and 211 were fined. Other penalties included forfeiture of emoluments, salary reductions, demotions, and suspensions of salary movement.
The recorded offences involved various forms of misconduct. Integrity-related cases were the highest at 1,072, followed by crime, drug abuse, governance, syariah, and corruption.
Ayob Khan noted the number was small compared to the total force strength of approximately 130,000. However, he said the impact on the force’s image was major.
“Maybe the number is only around one per cent but the impact is huge,” he said. He explained this small group could tarnish the image and affect all the team’s good achievements.
He elaborated that PDRM has an internal investigation mechanism through the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department. External monitoring is also conducted by the Independent Police Conduct Commission under the Home Ministry.
Therefore, members of the public dissatisfied with internal police investigations can lodge a complaint with the IPCC. Ayob Khan stressed integrity is the main foundation for maintaining public trust in the security forces.
He said it is also a pillar of organisational effectiveness. In today’s technological era, he noted any misconduct can be easily recorded and transmitted.
This demands every member displays a high level of integrity in every action, he concluded.
