More than 190 former Umno members in Masjid Tanah have rejoined the party, strengthening its grassroots support

ALOR GAJAH: More than 190 former members of the Masjid Tanah UMNO division returned to the party through the “Rumah Bangsa” initiative here last night.

All of them handed over their membership forms to Melaka UMNO chairman Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Yusoh at the “Sireh Pulang Ke Gagang” dinner held at his residence in Kampung Pulau, Masjid Tanah.

Ab Rauf, who is also Melaka Chief Minister, said the returnees comprised former members from various branches under the Masjid Tanah division.

“So, I welcome their return to Masjid Tanah UMNO and thank those involved in this effort, as they have returned to the true path of struggle to build a strong community.

“I can see tonight that they are very enthusiastic about rejoining this struggle and are ready to become part of the party machinery for the Melaka state election, which will be held in the near future,” he told reporters.

Rumah Bangsa is an UMNO unity initiative introduced by its president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to unite Malays and welcome former members back into the party.

In the 2021 Melaka state election, Barisan Nasional won 21 of the 28 seats. The current term of the state assembly will expire in December.
