KOTA KINABALU: More than 2,000 kilogrammes of used cooking oil were collected through a recycling competition involving 13 schools across Kota Kinabalu, organised by the Plantation and Commodities Ministry (KPK).
The initiative aimed to raise civic awareness and promote sustainable habits among students while highlighting the potential of used cooking oil as a raw material for producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin presented prizes to winners, with SJKC Chung Hwa Likas and SMK Sanzac emerging champions in the primary and secondary categories respectively.
Chan commended the schools, City Hall (DBKK), and JCI Kota Kinabalu for their collaboration in the first such initiative in Sabah, noting that collective efforts could help boost the State’s used oil recovery rate, which remains below 1.5 per cent of the national total.
He encouraged more schools and communities to join the programme, saying that small community actions can significantly contribute to sustainable energy goals while generating extra income and protecting the environment.
