A total of 239 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates in Penang apparently skipped their examinations on the grounds that they were already working.

According to a report by Kosmo, the State Education Director, Wan Sajiri Wan Hassan, revealed this but pointed out that the number of absent students this year was found to be lower as compared to the previous year’s record of 338 absent candidates.

“The results of the study found that the main factor in candidates not showing up for the 2024 SPM examinations, which began on December 2 of last year, was that most of them were already working,”

“They were found to be less interested in sitting for the examinations and their record of absences from school were also higher than the number of those who attended school.”

The State Education Department (JPN) wants students back in schools!

Wan Sajiri Wan Hassan went on to share that JPN will carry out an intervention programme to reduce the number of students who plan to skip the 2025 SPM examinations.

“We are working to reduce the number of students not attending and attract them back to school. The Jom SPM programme involves all District Education Offices (PPD) as well as communities and villages in Penang.”
