KUALA LUMPUR – A total of 43,406 flood victims were still sheltering at temporary relief centres in three states as at 8pm last night.
In Johor, the state disaster management committee said the number of flood victims in the state dropped to 40,129 last night from 49,543 yesterday afternoon, with 51 centres closed yesterday.
The victims from 11,210 families are housed at 216 centres, including three opened yesterday.
Of the nine districts hit by floods, Batu Pahat is the worst affected with 21,854 evacuees, followed by Segamat (4,913) and Muar (4,098).
According to the committee, the flood situation in Segamat was improving, unlike Batu Pahat which has continued to register an increase in evacuees.
In Melaka, the number of victims dropped marginally to 593 at 8pm from 597 in the afternoon, involving 160 families at five centres.
The disaster management committee secretariat said in a statement that the centre at Balai Raya Bukit Tambun in Alor Gajah was shut down at 2pm after floodwaters in the district fully receded and the victims were allowed to return home.
In Pahang, the Social Welfare Department’s InfoBencana app said the number of flood victims in the state dropped to 2,684 people housed at 19 centres last night, compared with 2,888 people at 20 centres yesterday afternoon.
Rompin district has the highest number of victims at 2,671, followed by Maran with 13 people.
The committee secretariat said Temerloh had recovered from floods and the centre at SMK Sri Semantan was closed at 4pm yesterday.
The Public InfoBanjir website reported that Sg Pahang in Paloh Hinai, Pekan, and Sg Keratong in Rompin were still above the danger level last night. – Bernama, March 7, 2023
