Kota Kinabalu: The Board of Visiting Justices for Sabah Prisons (BVJ) hopes the State Government can help solve the problem of overcrowded prisons by providing halfway houses for local inmates who have nowhere to go when they get out of incarceration.

“At the moment, Sabah’s prisons are overcrowded by over 60 per cent of their maximum capacity. There are about 3,000 people in Kota Kinabalu Prison, but the prison can only hold 1,500 people,” said BVJ Chairperson Datuk Katherine Lee Mei Oi.

She said Tawau and Sandakan also have too many prisoners.
