A video of a pickup truck recently went viral after it was spotted with a bumper sticker that sparked public concern.
Melaka police later identified the vehicle owner after discovering that the sticker on the back of the vehicle contained Hebrew text.
The sticker was bought over a decade ago
The owner of the vehicle later filed a police report after his car went viral on social media, something first noticed by his brother, who often drove the vehicle.
According to Sinar Harian, Melaka police said they’ve recorded a statement from the 59-year-old man, who claimed he bought the sticker simply because of his interest in foreign scripts like Greek and Russian.
“He once came across a Hebrew phrase that read ‘Israel Betainu’, which means ‘Israel Our Home.’ He then tweaked it by replacing the word ‘Israel’ with ‘Malaysia,’ turning it into ‘Malizia Beiteinu’ or ‘Malaysia Our Home,'” he said.
Melaka Police Chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said investigations showed that the retired civil servant admitted to ordering the sticker from a shop in Selangor about 13 years ago.
Experts to review writing for suspicious content
Dzulkhairi added that while the man’s statement has been recorded, investigations are still ongoing, including consultations with language experts to ensure there’s nothing suspicious or misleading about the sticker.
The case is now being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for causing public alarm and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of network facilities.
Police have since urged the public not to post provocative comments or spread exaggerated claims about the incident online.
