The Hungry Ghost Festival is observed to honor and appease the spirits of the deceased, who are believed to roam the earth during this time, with offerings of food, incense, and rituals.

While we’ve taught that such offerings are off-limits, it seems that a particular oyen didn’t quite get the memo and was seen munching away on it.

Oyen eats offerings meant for spirits

The video was shared on TikTok by a user named @catladywithadhd, where it subsequently went viral and garnered over 90,000 views at the time of writing.

In the clip, the oyen is seen munching away at a packet of rice with several dishes on it. While the candles nearby was enough to signal that the food wasn’t meant for humans, the feline didn’t seem too bothered by it.

Adding on to the already amusing scene was the OP’s choice of background music, where choral voices singing a rather ghostly tune rang out as the oyen continued to eat.

Netizens tickled by oyen’s ‘ignorance’

The sight of the cat helping itself to the food meant for ghosts added a humorous twist to the solemn tradition, leaving netizens unable to hold their amusement for the oyen’s actions.

‘Oyen: ‘So nice to have an open house today.’

‘First come, first serve.’

“Oyen: ‘Better not waste my daily sustenance.’
