Over 7.36 million Malaysian citizens, constituting 35 percent of the nation's populace, have recently updated their details in the Central Database Hub (Padu), according to Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin. The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM) anticipates a surge in registrations leading up to the March 31 deadline, buoyed by growing awareness among the public.
Dr. Mohd Uzir expressed confidence that more individuals, particularly those who have yet to register or update their information, will take action in the remaining days. He noted that the current registrations surpass the estimated 20 million Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above, with the actual count exceeding 10 million when factoring in dependents under 18.
Speaking during the Jelajah Padu tour in Kampung Tok Set, where around 100 villagers registered with Padu, Dr. Mohd Uzir highlighted the concerted efforts to reach out to communities, including rural areas, through various channels such as mass media, government outlets, and social media platforms. He emphasized the importance of clarity and familiarity with Padu among residents, underscoring proactive measures to address any uncertainties.
Anticipating a substantial uptick in registrations, Dr. Mohd Uzir revealed that Padu recorded over 300,000 registrations in a single day, with expectations of reaching up to 800,000 registrations soon. To streamline the process and minimize errors, DoSM plans to expand physical registration counters and enhance support for the public.
In Kedah, statistics indicate significant progress in Padu registration, with approximately 33 percent of residents, totaling around 533,000 individuals, already registered. Notably, Kedah boasts the highest youth registration rate in Malaysia at 41.8 percent, alongside over 207,000 senior citizens who have completed Padu registration, signaling promising engagement with the initiative.
The positive response to Padu registration underscores the importance of accurate and updated citizen data, facilitating effective governance and resource allocation. As the deadline approaches, efforts to promote awareness and accessibility will continue to ensure widespread participation and inclusivity in this nationwide endeavor.
