In the ongoing saga of governmental missteps, Malaysia's Central Database Hub (Padu) has become a symbol of frustration and discontent. The latest chapters see Sarawak slamming the brakes on Padu registration, while Sabah stands at the edge of rejection, all thanks to the overly assertive championing of its cause.
The dissatisfaction with Padu's registration process has now spilled over to Sabah, following Sarawak's recent refusal to partake. Sabah's Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan has joined the chorus of concerns, cautioning against the federal government's heavy-handed approach. He rightly points out that coercion and threats won't win over the people.
Jeffrey's discomfort with Padu's implementation is shared by many. He questions the security of personal data, the rush to register 20 million Malaysians within a mere four months, and the need for such intrusive information. His skepticism is warranted, especially considering Malaysia's status as one of the most breached nations globally.
The comparisons drawn by Jeffrey and Sarawak minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah between Padu and existing systems highlight a deeper issue of trust.
With over 65% of Malaysians yet to register, it's evident that the government has failed to instill confidence in its citizens. The complex nature of Padu's registration process and the extensive data requirements only add to the skepticism.
The Sarawak government's decision to halt registration and call for a review underscores the growing suspicion among Malaysians. MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong's warning about the system's complexity and lack of confidence in its security further fuel the flames of discontent.
In a country where trust in government initiatives is already fragile, Padu's overbearing rollout risks alienating not just Sarawak and Sabah, but a significant portion of the Malaysian population. It's time for a rethink—a more transparent, inclusive, and respectful approach that prioritizes citizens' privacy and concerns.
Otherwise, Padu risks being remembered not as a solution, but as another bureaucratic blunder in Malaysia's checkered history.
