Johor police are intensifying their investigation into the abduction of six-year-old Albertine Leo Jia Hui, with a strong focus on new evidence recently uncovered. The probe has led to the rearrest of a suspect, now under scrutiny for possessing disturbing materials, including sex toys and child pornography.
Johor police chief M. Kumar provided an update on the case, revealing that investigators are concentrating on the incriminating evidence found at the suspect’s residence in Kulai. This includes various items linked to sexual abuse and child pornography. Kumar assured the public that efforts are underway to determine the motive behind the abduction and to understand the full extent of the suspect’s actions.
“We are hopeful that with these new developments, we will soon be able to establish the motive behind the abduction, including the circumstances of the victim’s illegal confinement,” Kumar stated during a press conference at the Johor police headquarters.
The suspect, a 31-year-old man, was rearrested on Sunday after his initial remand period ended. This decision followed the discovery of the disturbing materials, which has shifted the focus of the investigation. The authorities are now examining whether these items are connected to the abduction.
Despite the unsettling nature of the evidence, Kumar emphasized that Albertine Leo has been declared in good health following her rescue. A medical specialist confirmed that the young girl showed no signs of sexual abuse. “Although the victim experienced trauma from the abduction, she is otherwise physically well,” Kumar explained.
The case continues to be investigated under Section 365 of the Penal Code, which deals with abduction. Notably, no ransom was demanded from the suspect, which distinguishes this case from typical abduction scenarios. The suspect's arrest and subsequent rearrest have been prompted by further interrogation and the discovery of incriminating materials under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
The suspect remains in custody following a six-day remand granted by the Kulai Magistrate’s Court, which will conclude this Saturday. His arrest marks him as the final individual apprehended in connection with the case. Earlier arrests included four other suspects, aged between 28 and 55, who have since been released on bail. The authorities have decided not to extend their remand periods.
The abduction case began when Albertine was reported missing on July 20 from the Eco Galleria shopping center in Iskandar Puteri. She was found on July 23 at a budget hotel near Batang Kali in Selangor, where the suspect was also apprehended.
The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the full details of the suspect's motives and any potential connections between the recovered materials and the abduction. The Johor police continue to work diligently to resolve the case and ensure justice for Albertine Leo.
