Pahang recorded 586 road accidents and seven deaths during the latest Ops Selamat, with motorcycles and federal roads being major factors.

KUANTAN: A total of 586 road accidents, including seven fatalities, were recorded in Pahang during Ops Selamat 26 from March 19 to 24.

The figure represents an increase of 32 cases compared to the 554 accidents and eight deaths recorded during the same operation last year.

State police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said motorcycles remained the main contributor to accidents.

He attributed some cases to rider negligence.

“Among the districts recording the highest number of accidents are Kuantan, Pekan, Lipis, Temerloh and Rompin,” he told reporters.

Yahaya said 318 accidents occurred on federal roads during the safety operation.

This was followed by state roads (56), highways (50) and municipal roads (44).

A total of 6,382 summonses were also issued for various traffic offences throughout the period.
