Pahang has successfully eradicated hardcore poverty, aligning with the government’s goals, announced Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail yesterday. He reported that 1,946 household heads previously classified as being in the hardcore poverty group have managed to increase their income sufficiently to exit this category.

However, Wan Rosdy noted that hardcore poverty is a highly subjective issue and its status can fluctuate over time. To address this, the state government plans to continue monitoring the situation closely. “When we identified the number of people in the hardcore poverty group, we tasked the state development office with monitoring and determining how we could assist them,” he explained to reporters when asked about the hardcore poverty rate in Pahang.

The announcement was made after Wan Rosdy presented donations to 99 individuals, including Orang Asli and students from Sekolah Menengah Agama Negeri Pahang who had achieved excellent results in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

Earlier, Wan Rosdy had revealed that on January 3, 2023, 4,968 individuals were classified as hardcore poor in Pahang. By December 31 of the same year, this number had dropped to 1,946.

Wan Rosdy elaborated that this success was due to the collaborative efforts of various parties, including initiatives from both federal and state governments. He highlighted several key programs implemented in Pahang that have contributed significantly to this achievement. These include the Pahang Prihatin Aid, the I-Push scheme for micro-entrepreneur financing, Pahang people's housing aid, and health cards, all of which have played vital roles in helping individuals escape the cycle of poverty.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also emphasized the unity government's commitment to eradicating hardcore poverty across the country.

In addition, Wan Rosdy discussed the impressive performance of Pahang Maahad Tahfiz, which made history by becoming the top school based on the recent SPM results released on May 27. He attributed this achievement to the concerted efforts of the students and the high-quality teaching staff.

These developments highlight Pahang’s dedicated efforts and multi-faceted approach to combating poverty and fostering educational excellence. Through ongoing support and effective programs, the state aims to ensure sustainable improvements in the livelihoods and opportunities for its residents.
