Pair self-isolating in UK after return from cruise ship affected by hantavirus outbreak

  • Two individuals who recently returned to the UK from a cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak have been instructed to self-isolate, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed.
  • The agency reassured the public that "the risk to general public remains very low" following their return from the MV Hondius.
  • Investigators now believe a Dutch couple, who visited a landfill site during a bird-watching excursion in Argentina, could be the origin of the outbreak.
  • Argentine officials indicated that the government's primary theory suggests the couple might have encountered rodents during their trip in Ushuaia.
  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) has linked eight suspected hantavirus cases to the vessel, with five of these now confirmed. Last Wednesday, three patients were medically evacuated from the ship to receive treatment in the Netherlands.
