Palace tells public to “be discerning” following VP’s latest remarks

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Tuesday urged the public to be more discerning and not be too easily convinced by the latest remarks of Vice President Sara Duterte on the current state of local politics.

Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro issued the statement in reaction to Duterte’s allegations that the administration is silencing the opposition, particularly those implicated in the flood control projects scandal.

The vice president asserted that “government institutions and public funds are being used against any form of opposition” instead of addressing head on “the real problems facing our people”.

“Those who are being charged are those who are allegedly involved in anomalies or corruption. This goes through investigation, respect for due process and those accused are heard and given the opportunity to respond,” Castro retorted in Filipino in a statement.

“Our countrymen are looking for those who should be held accountable, whom they call BIG FISH,” she added.

Castro stressed that Duterte’s message is alarming because it appears she is whitewashing those involved in corruption.

“Is it because they are her allies? Whether allies or not, if they are implicated, they should be investigated—that’s what’s happening now,” she said.

“She is making it appear that they are all just victims of political persecution. They have no other defense but to criticize the administration, but remain silent on the merits of the accusations. Be critical. Don't be fooled,” she added.
