Police arrested two members of the Rohit Godara gang after a shootout in the early hours of Thursday, following an attack on a club owner in Panchkula.
The incident took place when assailants opened fire at Rattan Lubana, owner of Da Bodega Bar & Kitchen, who is also the brother-in-law of a BJP councillor from ward No. 1, Panchkula.
Another bystander, Lalit, also sustained a gunshot injury. Around eight shots were fired when Lubana was coming out of Sector-5 Swiss Lounge around midnight.
The two bike-borne suspects fled towards the Yamunanagar highway but were chased by police and intercepted near Mattawala flyover.
During the encounter, the accused allegedly fired at police, prompting retaliatory firing in which both were shot in the leg and taken into custody.
The suspects have been identified as Ludhiana resident Jaswinder Singh and Hoshiarpur resident Harpreet Singh, both linked to the Godara gang. Police said Jaswinder already faces two attempt-to-murder cases.
Two pistols were recovered from them, and officials said the accused fired around 18 rounds during the incident.
Panchkula Deputy Commissioner of Police Srishti Gupta said it appears to be a case of extortion, adding that the victim had received threat calls from a gangster.
The DCP said that both accused have been arrested and admitted to Sector 6 Civil Hospital, Panchkula. Two separate cases have been registered and investigations are underway.
