Tuaran: The spirit of ‘ukhuwah’ (unity) must be emphasised as a key foundation in safeguarding the nation’s independence.

Pantai Dalit Assemblyman Datuk Jasnih Daya, said unity is not just a social bond, but the key to understanding one another and sharing common goals for the future of the nation.

“When there is unity, we can understand each other and, indirectly, know what we need to share together.

“Our aim is clear, to make this state a suitable place for us and for future generations,” he said.

Jasnih said part of upholding independence is ensuring that the younger generation is not tied to things that could weaken their identity.

“Current issues demand that we find ways to free the next generation from unhealthy mindsets and cultures. This too is a form of independence that must be achieved,” he said when speaking at the Madani Unity Programme in conjunction with National Month here on Thursday.

He emphasised that the programme was not only about spiritual enrichment, but also a platform to strengthen unity, foster good relations and express love for Sabah and for Malaysia.
