Paraguayans woke up to a surprise national holiday on Tuesday declared by the government following the country's unexpected win over Germany at the men's World Cup.
President Santiago Peña announced the holiday on X late on Monday after the Paraguayan team beat Germany 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the last 32.
Posting the decree declaring the holiday, Peña wrote: "Today, the whole country is celebrating."
"It is celebrating the victory of a national team that embodies the very essence of our identity: the fighting spirit, the faith and the strength of a people who never give up."
Peña also shared a photo of himself signing the decree in a national team jersey.
He thanked the team for the "immense joy" they had brought the country.
Paraguay are back at the World Cup for the first time since 2010. In their bid to reach the quarter-finals, Paraguay will face off against either France or Sweden.
