Parasite outbreak at petting farm as 16 visitors fall ill

  • Sixteen people have fallen ill with cryptosporidium after visiting Craigies Farm in South Queensferry, near Edinburgh.
  • Health officials from NHS Lothian and the East Region Health Protection Service are currently investigating the outbreak.
  • Cryptosporidium is a disease carried by various farm animals, causing symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting.
  • The infection can be contracted through contact with animals or their enclosures, with handwashing being crucial for prevention.
  • While anyone can be infected, children aged one to five are most commonly affected, and symptoms typically last around two weeks.
