Parents and grandparents arrested after 16 children found in ‘deplorable’ home

  • Sixteen children, aged 1 1/2 to 18, were rescued from a dilapidated home in rural Hamden, Ohio, where they were found living in "wretched conditions" with human waste and confined to a single 12-by-12-foot room for much of the past four years.
  • Authorities described the scene as "almost beyond comprehension" and "pure evil," noting that some children were unable to speak, and an 18-year-old developmentally disabled individual could not write her name.
  • The children were discovered by authorities on Tuesday while executing a search warrant for an unrelated investigation, with officials stating that it appeared no one outside the family knew about the children, who were not enrolled in school.
  • Their parents, Gary Siders Jr. and Christina Siders, along with grandparents Gary Siders Sr. and Elizabeth Siders, were charged with second-degree felony child endangerment, with a judge setting bond at $300,000 for each.
  • Seven children were transported to hospitals, with two flown by helicopter and one in critical condition, while the family reportedly avoided setting up medical and government records, making them "good at hiding these kids."
