Parents can now see what kids are asking Meta AI after $375m lawsuit

  • Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is introducing a new tool to allow parents to see the topics their children discuss with its AI chatbots.
  • Launching on 23 April, the 'Insights' tab within existing parental supervision tools will display broad categories and sub-topics of AI interactions over the previous seven days.
  • This feature will initially be available to parents in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Brazil, with a global rollout planned subsequently, and requires children to use Teen accounts.
  • The initiative follows a recent $375 million order for Meta due to failing to block child exploitation on its apps, and the company has also formed an AI Wellbeing Expert Council.
  • The development comes amidst increasing scrutiny and legal action against social media companies, including a recent $6 million ruling against Meta and Google for contributing to a user's addiction and mental health issues.
