Parts of Batangas may see thin ashfall after Taal eruption

MANILA, Philippines — A brief phreatomagmatic eruption occurred at Taal Volcano on Thursday evening, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

"Thin ashfall is expected to affect the southwestern lakeshore towns of Agoncillo, Lemery, San Nicolas, Taal, Batangas and adjacent areas," Phivolcs said on Facebook.

It occurred at 6:06 p.m. at the volcano's main crater and lasted five minutes, Phivolcs said.

"The event generated a dark gray plume that rose 4000 meters above the crater as recorded by the Main Crater West Rim (VTWR), Daang Kastila (VTDK) and Buco (VTBC) cameras," Phivolcs said.

Alert Level 1 was kept over the volcano.
