Amid backlash over a controversial social media post made by PAS member Zaharuddin Muhammad, the party has publicly disassociated itself from remarks suggesting that Malaysia could see its first Chinese Prime Minister within a few decades. The statement, made in reference to Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng’s historic military promotion, ignited public debate on race, merit, and leadership in the country.
Zaharuddin’s comment, which speculated that a Chinese Malaysian might one day become Prime Minister following Lim’s appointment as the first ethnic Chinese Lieutenant General in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), was widely criticised for stirring racial anxieties. Although the post was later removed, its content had already circulated and drawn condemnation from various quarters.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan responded by issuing a clear statement that the views expressed were entirely personal and not reflective of the party’s principles or vision. He reaffirmed that PAS does not tolerate racism or prejudice, stating that such behaviour runs contrary to the values enshrined in the party’s constitution and resolutions.
Takiyuddin emphasized that Malaysia’s diversity is a national strength, and differences in ethnicity or faith should never be used to hinder anyone’s progress or aspirations. He further stated that the historic promotion of Datuk Johnny Lim represents a moment of pride for all Malaysians and should be recognised as such, regardless of the officer’s racial background.
PAS, he added, has always acknowledged the importance of multiracial harmony and aims to foster national unity through its policies and actions. The party, according to Takiyuddin, remains committed to upholding Malaysia’s multicultural identity and nurturing it through inclusivity and mutual respect.
While the statement reaffirmed PAS’s stance against racism, it also included a warning. The party declared that disciplinary action would be taken against any member who contravenes its official policies or promotes divisive sentiments. Leaders and members alike were reminded to act responsibly, especially in public discourse, to preserve unity and avoid sowing distrust within society.
Takiyuddin concluded by congratulating Datuk Johnny Lim on his achievement, describing it as a milestone that reflects merit and dedication — qualities that should be applauded regardless of ethnic origin. He stressed that PAS’s priority is national cohesion, not individual opinions that deviate from that collective goal.
