In an unexpected display of political unity, PAS has called on its members to join UMNO in a “Solidarity with Najib Razak” rally scheduled for January 6 outside the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya. The event coincides with the Court of Appeal hearing regarding an alleged royal directive that could potentially allow former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his prison term under house arrest.

An internal PAS memo, circulating widely on social media, has urged its supporters to gather in support of Najib. This rally marks a rare collaboration between PAS and UMNO, signaling a shared interest in showing solidarity with the embattled former premier.

Adding to the political fervor, Federal Territories UMNO leader Gulam Muszaffar has called on party members to rally behind Najib.

Najib is currently serving a six-year prison sentence after being convicted of misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International, a subsidiary of 1MDB. His latest petition seeks permission for house arrest, citing an alleged royal addendum that could alter the terms of his incarceration.

Meanwhile, the rally announcement comes amidst unrelated but notable criticism of Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh Tseow Suan. UMNO veteran and secretary-general Datuk Mustapha Yaakub has called for her resignation following her loss in a defamation lawsuit against former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan. Mustapha argued that Yeoh’s legal defeat undermines the credibility of the Madani government, led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Drawing parallels to a historical legal case from 1963, Mustapha compared Yeoh’s loss to former Health Minister Abdul Rahman Talib’s failed defamation suit against opposition MP Darma Raja Seenivasagam. “Such outcomes raise questions about the moral authority of those holding public office,” he asserted.

As the January 6 hearing approaches, the solidarity rally underscores Najib’s enduring influence and the significance of his legal battle within Malaysia’s political landscape. The unprecedented PAS-UMNO collaboration reflects a shared resolve to spotlight the former leader’s plight and maintain his relevance in national discourse.
