As I predicted — and as many of us already knew — PAS president Hadi Awang has finally declared that PAS’s relationship with Bersatu is over.
Whose fault is it?
Although I am certainly no fan of PAS, I will place the blame for this “divorce” squarely on Bersatu.
Why?
Because Bersatu lacks self-awareness.
It behaves like a husband who neither works nor takes care of the family, yet expects the wife to constantly defer to him as the superior partner in the relationship.
This despite the fact that the wife is the one doing all the work and taking care of the husband. Worse still, despite the wife doing everything — even giving the husband pocket money — the husband gambles away what he is given while frolicking with other women.
At some point, the "wife" is bound to break up with the husband. She is bound to, because the relationship is absurd - there is no point in it existing.
The problem with Bersatu is not that it is ungrateful to PAS. The problem is that it lives too much in its own head and in the future.
In its mind, Bersatu probably believes it has enormous potential and that it is only a matter of time before everyone recognises it. When that day comes, it probably intends to reward PAS generously for supporting it during difficult times.
On the basis of this imagined future greatness, Bersatu has taken what PAS gave it while behaving as if it were the superior partner — despite clearly being the inferior one .
PAS probably believed Bersatu had future potential too. That is why it tolerated Bersatu for so long despite gaining little besides burden and losses from the relationship.
But eventually, hope runs out.
PAS has long reached a point where it simply lost faith in Bersatu — although Bersatu itself still appears unable to accept reality.
It is true that Bersatu had potential. But time and tide wait for no man.
You must seize opportunities when your moment arrives. You cannot endlessly wait and expect the sun to keep shining on you forever.
If you wait too long, the window of opportunity will close. And then you become a pathetic figure — dreaming about a great future because you had great potentials in the past, while remaining miserable and lost in the present.
When PH and PN were neck-and-neck after GE15, Bersatu should have done more — much, much more — to capitalize on the moment and secure a better outcome.
Unfortunately, instead of chasing success, Bersatu under Muhyiddin Yassin chose to wait for success to come to it.
PAS waited many years for the success Muhyiddin promised would come. While waiting, PAS worked loyally and diligently as the second-in-command within the coalition despite being larger, more organised, and electorally valuable than Bersatu .
But reality eventually bites.
Instead of continuing to wait like a fool for success to arrive, PAS seems to have realised that success is something you pursue — not something that simply comes to you.
And so it decided to leave behind Bersatu, which still stubbornly believes success must eventually arrive simply because it is Bersatu — the party with pedigree, led by national figures like Muhyiddin and Mahathir.
PAS’s decision yesterday was not really a decision.
PAS’s relationship with Bersatu had already died long ago.
Yesterday was simply the day it decided to bury the body.
