It seems like there is a discussion surrounding a statement made by DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang regarding the possibility of a non-Malay becoming the prime minister of Malaysia. A leader from the PAS party has described this statement as "poisonous propaganda" and expressed concerns about its potential to incite disharmony in the country.
The PAS secretary-general, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, stated that several DAP leaders, including the late Karpal Singh in 2012 and Lim himself in 2017, had previously raised this matter. Takiyuddin Hassan argued that Lim's recent statement deliberately distorted the intentions of documents such as the Federal Constitution, the Rukun Negara, and Vision 2020. According to him, Lim falsely gave the impression that these documents aimed at a multi-ethnic "Malaysian Dream" rather than a mono-ethnic dream.
Takiyuddin Hassan also highlighted the timing of Lim's statement, suggesting that it coincided with a period of uncertainty for UMNO, a party with a significant Malay constituency. He suggested that Lim took advantage of this situation to raise the issue, as UMNO remained silent due to its partnership in the Madani government.
However, Takiyuddin Hassan acknowledged that, according to the Constitution, there are no specific criteria, such as ethnicity, for someone to become prime minister. Article 43(2)(a) states that the premier must be an elected Member of Parliament who has the majority support of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Malaysian King.
The report also mentions that Lim has been summoned by the police to give a statement about his remarks. Although the specific act for which Lim is being investigated was not confirmed, it is believed to be for allegedly provoking discussion about the possibility of a non-Malay becoming prime minister.
Takiyuddin Hassan further criticized Lim, accusing him of disregarding the conventions and practices followed since independence, where no non-Malay has held the position of prime minister or deputy prime minister. Takiyuddin Hassan suggested that Lim's remarks demonstrated prejudice against the Malays and their role as leaders in the country.
He argued that Lim's promotion of a "Malaysian Dream" narrative was reminiscent of the concept of "Malaysian Malaysia" proposed by former Singapore premier Lee Kuan Yew. According to Takiyuddin Hassan, both Lee and Lim's rhetoric raises questions about the position and privileges accorded to Malays and Bumiputera as outlined in the Constitution.
Concluding the statement, Takiyuddin Hassan warned against raising such issues, emphasizing the potential negative implications for racial harmony in Malaysia. He invoked the memory of the May 13 racial riots from over 50 years ago, suggesting that discussing these matters could lead to similar tensions and division within the community.
It's important to note that this statement represents the perspective of a PAS leader and should be understood within that context.
