PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has responded to former Damansara MP Tony Pua's claim that the quality of debates among opposition MPs in Parliament lacks substance. Tuan Ibrahim countered Pua's assessment by suggesting that he has not been fully following the debates in the Dewan Rakyat.

Tuan Ibrahim asserted that many significant issues have been raised in Parliament, such as the economy, investment, climate change, and the impact of the depreciation of the ringgit. In contrast, matters pertaining to attire, language, race, and religion have been given less attention by the representatives. According to Tuan Ibrahim, the focus has been on seeking explanations from the government on issues related to the 3Rs, which stands for race, religion, and royalty.

Interestingly, despite defending the debates in Parliament, Tuan Ibrahim ended up touching on the very issues that he claimed were not given much attention. He accused Pua of trying to divert attention from Ngeh Koo Ham, a fellow member of the DAP who recently apologized for suggesting that non-Muslim constitutional experts be included in a committee studying conflicts between syariah law and the Federal Constitution.

In response to Pua's criticism, Tuan Ibrahim shifted the focus to the controversy surrounding Ngeh Koo Ham, suggesting that Pua's comments were an attempt to deflect attention from the issue. This diversion tactic seems to support Pua's argument about the lack of substantive discussions regarding public policy in Parliament.

Pua's critique of the current state of parliamentary debates centered around the observation that opposition MPs primarily focus on narrow topics, such as race, religion, alcohol, and attire. He expressed his disappointment with the lack of discussions on a broader spectrum of issues that are crucial for governing a country effectively. Pua particularly noted that during the time when Pakatan Harapan was the opposition, the issues raised in Parliament were more substantive.

He emphasized the need for a better understanding of the basics of public policy among opposition MPs. Pua's frustration seems to stem from the observation that important and complex matters are being overshadowed by discussions limited to a few sensitive subjects. In conclusion, Tuan Ibrahim's response to Pua's criticism appeared to reinforce Pua's concerns rather than refute them.

Tuan Ibrahim's deflection to the controversy surrounding Ngeh Koo Ham suggests that there may indeed be a lack of substantive discussions on significant issues in Parliament. Pua's call for a more comprehensive and informed approach to public policy debates remains valid and should serve as a reminder to all MPs to address a wider range of pressing issues that affect the country and its citizens.
