The recent comments made by PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang regarding Islam's position in Malaysia have sparked controversy and drawn criticism from the Sultan of Selangor. In response, PAS's information chief has clarified that Hadi's remarks do not represent the views of the party as a whole.
Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, the information chief of PAS, stated that Abdul Hadi's statements were personal in nature and should not be construed as reflecting the party's official stance. He advised the media to seek clarification from Hadi or the PAS president's office directly.
Similarly, Selangor PAS youth chief Mohamed Sukri Omar refrained from commenting further, suggesting that the matter be left to the discretion of the PAS president to respond to the Selangor Sultan's decree.
In light of the controversy, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain announced that investigations have been launched against Abdul Hadi under the Sedition Act 1948 and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. However, due to Abdul Hadi's reported illness, his statement has yet to be recorded.
Despite his health condition, recent reports indicate that Abdul Hadi's health is improving. He was able to deliver a sermon at a mosque in Marang, Terengganu, suggesting signs of recovery following medical treatment.
The Sultan of Selangor, in a letter dated February 27, criticized Hadi's remarks as ill-mannered and inappropriate. The Sultan urged Hadi to be more careful in the future to avoid making statements that could divide Muslims in Malaysia. He also emphasized the importance of not politicizing Islam for personal or party interests.
Ab Halim Tamuri, Selangor PAS chief, acknowledged receiving the Sultan's letter but declined to comment further on the matter.
The unfolding events underscore the sensitivity of religious and political discourse in Malaysia. They highlight the need for responsible leadership and respectful dialogue, particularly on matters related to religion and national unity.
As investigations into Abdul Hadi's comments continue, it remains to be seen how PAS will address the concerns raised by the Selangor Sultan and navigate the repercussions of this controversy.
