In a recent statement, former Malaysian law minister Zaid Ibrahim criticized the Islamic party PAS (Parti Islam Se-Malaysia), stating that it had missed a crucial opportunity to modernize its image and win broader support by attacking the judiciary. The controversy arose from PAS President's remarks regarding a recent legal case in Kelantan, where he reportedly criticized the judges, labeling them as "having the legacy of the colonisers."

Zaid Ibrahim in his tweet emphasized that the judiciary was merely interpreting the laws of the land, particularly the Constitution, which itself is a legacy of the British colonial era. He highlighted the irony of the PAS President's stance, noting that the entire legal system in Malaysia is largely based on British principles.

The former law minister further reminded the PAS President of his past actions, including a refusal to take his oath of office in the Trengganu Legislative Assembly, citing the Constitution's perceived lack of Islamic adherence. Zaid Ibrahim recounted that the PAS President relented only after being informed that failure to take the oath would lead to disqualification, illustrating the necessity for all citizens, including political leaders, to abide by the country's laws.

Zaid Ibrahim suggested that the PAS President should have shown understanding towards the judiciary's decision and urged Muslims to be patient, emphasizing that change could come through democratic means, such as elections, where PAS could potentially bring about transformations, including in the Constitution. However, the PAS President failed to present a clear vision for the future under PAS governance, according to Zaid Ibrahim.

In his critique, Zaid Ibrahim emphasized the importance of political leaders who inspire hope and envision positive change for the country. He suggested that PAS leaders should move away from a mindset of complaint and instead present a vision that resonates with the aspirations of the people.
