The political contest for Malaysia’s future voters is heating up, with the youth vote increasingly seen as the decisive battleground. PAS vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah has warned that the party must take Parti Bersama Malaysia seriously, describing it as a potential rival capable of reshaping the political preferences of younger Malaysians.

Amar stressed that while long-time supporters of PAS are unlikely to shift their allegiance, the real uncertainty lies among first-time and younger voters. According to him, this demographic is more fluid, politically aware, and highly responsive to issues such as governance, accountability, and abuse of power - areas that Bersama appears to be actively championing.

He specifically pointed to Bersama’s political messaging, which he said resonates strongly with idealistic young voters. “Other parties, including PAS, must take this seriously. We must think about how not to lose younger voters,” Amar was reported as saying during a recent engagement in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. His remarks signal growing concern within established political structures about shifting voter psychology in an increasingly digital and reform-oriented political landscape.

The warning comes as Bersama, led by Dato' Seri Rafizi Ramli and Sdr. Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, rolls out a distinctive candidate recruitment strategy. The party has opened applications to all Malaysians interested in standing as election candidates, with a special focus on Johor and Negeri Sembilan. This open-door approach is paired with a strict three-phase screening system, requiring applicants to declare their income, assets, educational background, career history, and family details.

Beyond paperwork, Bersama also plans to conduct community-based qualitative surveys, gathering feedback from local residents about potential candidates. This method, according to its leadership, is intended to ensure that candidates are not only qualified on paper but also acceptable and trusted at the grassroots level.

Amar also acknowledged Bersama’s “clever” open candidate system, noting that political observers have yet to fully assess the party’s real strength. This uncertainty, combined with its structured recruitment model, has added to the perception that Bersama may be attempting to redefine candidate selection in Malaysian politics.

Adding further momentum, Rafizi has reportedly set an ambitious target of fielding a line-up where 70% of candidates are under the age of 50, alongside a strong push to include more women. This signals a deliberate strategy to reposition the party as youthful, inclusive, and reform-driven.

As Malaysia moves closer to the next general election, the emergence of new political players like Bersama suggests that the traditional dominance of established parties may no longer be guaranteed. The real test will be whether youthful idealism translates into sustained electoral support - or whether it remains an experimental political wave.
