Polish investigators have recovered parts of human foetuses from a garden previously owned by a medical professional, according to a media report on Friday.
The 57-year-old woman, who works as a pathologist, was arrested, the PAP news agency reported, citing the prosecutor's office in Rzeszów in south-east Poland.
She had previously owned the property in the village of Lutoryż, 12 kilometres from the city. The new owners discovered large quantities of medical waste in the garden, including paraffin blocks and microscope slides.
"These items were discovered during excavation work on the property. Among the waste uncovered were a human foetus and other remains that could be human foetuses in an early stage of development or parts thereof," said a spokesman for the prosecutor's office.
The suspect is under investigation for desecration of a corpse and illegal disposal of hazardous waste. This could result in a sentence of between two and 12 years in prison.
