Five days after the body of a 20-year old woman was recovered from a blue drum near DCW, the Patiala police have cracked the case and have claimed to have arrested the main accused, who was the victim’s lover. Both the victim and the accused hail from Uttar Pradesh and were presently staying in Anaj Mandi area and were in a relationship for the past over a year.

Elaborating on the case details, Patiala SP (city) Palwinder Cheema said on Monday evening the body of a girl was found in a blue drum near DCW. The body looks like that of an 18 to 20-year-old girl and was packed inside a drum left near garbage.

Following the initial probe, the girl was identified as Neha after the police managed to trace her brother Bablu Shekhar, who hails from Uttar Pradesh and presently staying in Patiala. “Our investigations revealed that Virat Kashyap was having a relationship with the victim from the past over a year. Thereafter our teams managed to arrest the accused,” said Cheema.

During the probe, Virat revealed that the victim was pressuring him for marriage following which he planned to eliminate her. “On May 25, the accused had a tiff with the victim over marriage following which he strangled her to death and later put her body in a blue drum. He managed to arrange for a vehicle and then threw the drum in DCW, from where it was recovered the next day by the police,” said Cheema.

Last year, the “blue drum murder" of a merchant navy officer, allegedly committed by his wife and her paramour, had made headlines.

On Monday evening, the body of a young woman in her twenties was found stuffed inside a blue drum beneath the overbridge near Patiala Locomotive Works area near the Rajpura-Sirhind road.

The only clue the police had were the tattoos, that she had on both her arms; while based on nearby CCTV footage from cameras and some technical help, the case was cracked.
