Patient being tested for Ebola at hospital in Scotland

  • A patient is currently undergoing tests for suspected Ebola virus at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, having been admitted in the early hours of Tuesday.
  • Public Health Scotland has stated there are no confirmed cases of Ebola in Scotland at present, but confirmed that established protocols are in place for assessing and testing travellers from affected areas.
  • The suspected case follows an outbreak of the Bundibugyo Ebola virus, primarily in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has seen nearly 700 confirmed cases and 138 deaths, including two in neighbouring Uganda.
  • If confirmed, this would mark the first Ebola case in the UK since the outbreak in the DRC was declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organisation.
  • The UK has pledged up to £21 million to support the Ebola response in the DRC, with specialists from the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team deployed to the region to aid international efforts in containing the disease.
