It’s not new that there have been accusations against Malaysian police, ranging from rape to extortion. In recent news, attention has been drawn online to an incident where an officer was caught on tape asking for a bribe.
In a recent video circulating online, user @doktorrezz shared footage of a British couple doing a van tour across the globe, and they’re currently in Malaysia.
The user shared that the couple had just arrived in Malaysia at the time of the incident, and they were travelling to Ipoh from Cameron Highlands. They were abruptly stopped and informed by the police that they were allegedly speeding.
To make matters worse, the couple had to choose between paying a fine of either at the police station or on the spot.
In the video, the police can be heard informing the couple that he will issue a summons for them. They were given the option to either pay RM300 at the police station or settle it on the spot for RM100.
At the end of the video, the couple expressed how they sat and tried processing what had happen, and proceeded to question themselves if they were really speeding.
Netizens swiftly jumped in the comment section, expressing their concern that bribing seems so normal nowadays
“This is what you call stupid. Summons can be paid online.”
“This is one of Malaysia’s main problems. Bribery has become so normalised here.”
“It’s clear that the police have done this too many times. He appeared calm, as if bribing is something legal and normal.”
