Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) has appointed veteran politician Ronnie Liu Thian Khiew as its new information chief, just a week after he joined the party, taking over from Saarah Ali Bashah.
The appointments were approved at the party’s Supreme Council meeting yesterday (Aug 16), with William Low named deputy information chief, taking over from Krishna Govinth, who has since left PBM.
Benny Sieh was appointed treasurer-general, replacing Engga Anak Unchat, while Sieh Ing Qing was named deputy treasurer-general.
PBM president Datuk Larry Sng also appointed Engga and Saarah to the Supreme Council under the president’s appointment quota.
Liu, who joined DAP in 1982, left the party on June 24, 2023, after 41 years with it. He joined PBM on Aug 9 this year.
He was a former Selangor executive councillor and served as the Pandamaran and Sungai Pelek assemblyman.
Sng had previously said Liu’s entry was part of PBM’s effort to expand its leadership and strengthen grassroots development across Peninsular Malaysia.
PBM secretary-general Munan Anak Laja said the appointments were expected to further strengthen the party’s leadership and machinery.
“PBM is confident that this strengthened leadership line-up will continue to make a positive contribution towards expanding the party’s activities and strengthening PBM’s struggle and aspirations for the people,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Sng has been PBM president since 2022 and is also the Julau MP.
The next few months will be interesting to observe how Liu's re-entry into active politics will fit into the current political landscape. Will PBM become DAP2.0? And who will they support as the next government?
In this overcrowded arena of political parties, how can PBM compete against Rafizi's Bersama, Hamzah's Wawasan and others as well?
Liu indicated previously that PBM intended to contest between 35 and 40 seats. He also said that PBM intended to offer smaller parties and individuals to contest under the PBM platform.
