THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) received a boost to its operational capabilities Tuesday as Australia announced additional support for the agency’s aerial and maritime drone programs through 2030.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced the new assistance package during a visit aboard the PCG vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua at Pier 15 in Manila.
Department of Transportation Senior Undersecretary Mark Steven Pastor and PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan received Wong, thanking Australia for its continued backing of the agency’s modernization efforts.
“The PCG remains committed to working closely with Australia to strengthen maritime security and enhance its capabilities in safeguarding the country’s maritime interests,” said PCG spokesman Commodore Noemie Cayabyab.
The latest agreement builds on previous Australian initiatives supporting Philippine maritime domain awareness. The event featured a static display of drone assets previously donated by Canberra, demonstrating the practical outcomes of the bilateral cooperation.
Following the public presentation, Wong held a private meeting with Gavan to discuss broader regional maritime security issues and identify further opportunities for collaboration.
According to Cayabyab, the engagement reinforces a partnership grounded in mutual trust and a shared commitment to maintaining a peaceful, rules-based maritime region.
