PDRM Confirms Foreign Suspect of a Rape Case Escaped from Sibu Police Station While Still in Handcuffs

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has launched a manhunt for a foreign suspect of a rape case who managed to escaped from police custody at the Sibu Central Police Station lockup in Sibu, Sarawak.

The suspect, a 25-year-old Indonesian national named Buni, escaped from the police station at around 4pm yesterday (21 June).

In a statement, Sibu District Police Chief ACP Zulkipli bin Suhaili said that the suspect was still under a remand period for a rape case investigated under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code when he escaped police custody.

Furthermore, the suspect escaped while still in handcuffs and wearing the purple lockup uniform.

Following the escape, the police have launched “Op Kesan” to hunt down the suspect, with the case being investigated under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code for escaping from confinement and obstruction to lawful apprehension, respectively. If convicted, the suspect may face imprisonment of up to 2 years or a fine or both.

The Sibu District Police thus urged the public with information on the suspect to channel the information to their hotline at 084-344111, or contact the Investigating Officer, ASP Mingat Anak Bakil, at 019-886797, or come forward to their nearest police station.
