The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have detained a local man who recently went viral for caning his nephews and throwing a chair at one of them at a house in Petaling Jaya.

Petaling Jaya District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat confirmed the matter in an official statement last night (17 January), saying the 38-year-old suspect was arrested and detained yesterday to assist with investigations.

According to Shamsudin, police received a report regarding the viral caning incident at around 1:21 PM yesterday. Initial investigations found that the suspect is the uncle of both victims, aged eight and 11. The statement added that the children had earlier been involved in an argument with their grandmother, who is also the suspect’s mother.

The suspect was brought before the Petaling Jaya Magistrate’s Court this morning (18 January) and was remanded for two days to facilitate further investigations.

Throughout the process, the suspect did not comment on the matter and did not speak to members of the media at the court, according to China Press.

Shamsudin said the case is being investigated under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001 and urged the public to refrain from speculation while investigations are ongoing.

Earlier, CCTV footage circulated on social media showing the man caning one of his nephews and throwing a chair. Prior to his arrest, the suspect shared his side of the story, claiming that his 11-year-old nephew had been behaving mischievously at home, which he said posed a danger to his 76-year-old mother.

In one of the CCTV clips, the child was also seen approaching his grandmother while holding a cleaver.
