The prison sentence takes effect from June 17

Judge Hamidah Mohamed Deril sentenced suspended Corporals Hasrol Irmey Abu Hasim, 36, and Muhammad Helmi Jamaluddin, 34, along with Amir Moktar, 47, and Mohd Ridhwan Azman, 39, after ruling that the defence had failed to establish reasonable doubt at the end of the trial.

“With that, the court sentences all four accused to 12 years in prison and five strokes of the cane. The prison term takes effect today (June 17),” said Hamidah.

Defence lawyer Nur Azimul Azami Mohamad Nor requested a stay of execution pending an appeal against the conviction and sentence, but the judge instructed that a formal application must be filed.
