Penang has a new police chief who officially started his role in mid-May.

However, not even a month into his new role, he had already received some letters from loansharks threatening his safety.

According to Oriental Daily, Penang police chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin had a letter mailed to his office on 1 June. When the administrative officer opened up the letter, they saw threats printed on it.

The loansharks threatened the police chief and asked him to cooperate with them so that he will not be splashed with paint or acid or even be shot. They also threatened to set fire to a shop lot or even the police station. Enclosed with the letter are 6 pieces of Chinese joss paper banknotes.

After reading the letter, the police then opened an investigation paper and the case is currently being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code.

Speaking to BERNAMA, the Penang police chief says that the threats are normal and it is a risk that the police face when they are actively fighting crime. He adds that he is unfazed and will continue to take stricter action.

“As Penang’s chief of police, I and all Penang contingent of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will not compromise or conspire with any party that carries out illegal activities.”

We certainly hope that the perpetrator will be caught soon!
