Women’s doubles Pearly Tan- M. Thinaah are now one step closer to a podium finish after they defeated their Indonesian rivals Apriyani Rahayu-Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti in two straight sets.

With this win, this guarantees their spot in the quarter-finals, where they join fellow compatriots Toh Ee Wei and Chen Tang Jie.

Pearly-Thinaah through into quarter-finals

Despite being placed in Group A, which was dubbed the ‘group of death’ due to the number of formidable opponents, Pearly-Thinaah didn’t disappoint as they put on a brilliant show of teamwork and grit against their World No. 9 rivals.

As a result, they booked their spot in the knockout stage with a 21-18, 21-9, placing them as runner-ups for Group A.

At the start of their campaign, Pearly-Thinaah lost 21-17, 22-20 to China’s Chen Qing Chen-Jia Yi Fan but shocked everyone with a closely-fought victory over Japan’s two-time world champions Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara with a 18-21, 21-16, 21-16 score.

However, in a surprising twist of fate, the pair’s chances of emerging out from the group stage intact were greatly boosted after Qing Chen-Yi Fan prevailed over Matsumoto-Nagahara.

Huge congratulations to Pearly-Thinaah for their win and we hope to see them advance even further in the competition!
