
Kota Kinabalu: A man and his wife sustained serious injuries in a fire that razed 38 units of a kongsi (workers’ quarters) in Penampang Baru, Sunday.
The fire happened barely 24 hours after over 600 people lost their homes in Likas, while two others died in Penampang.
Advertisement“My father worked in the carpentry department at the construction site,” said Yusuf, 38, who identified his father only as Yakub. His stepmother was also injured in the fire.
Firefighters identified the injured as a 63-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman.

Another construction worker, Mohd Sadik, a father of five, said they were taking a nap when the fire happened at about 1.10pm.

It is understood that several units in the same locality were also destroyed in a fire on Jan 13, 2024.

The fire was brought under control at 2.20pm and the operations ended at 3.30pm.
