GEORGE TOWN: The Penang State Legislative Assembly has opened a dedicated lactation room for breastfeeding mothers as part of a RM1.5 million upgrading project at its premises in Lebuh Light.
State Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Law Choo Kiang said facilities catering to women’s welfare were a key focus of the interior upgrading works, with the lactation room officially launched on Nov 5.
“With regard to the building’s interior, the main focus included a review of women’s welfare facilities through the provision of a dedicated lactation room to accommodate women who are breastfeeding,” he said.
Law said particular attention had also been given to the condition of the building’s structure, which underwent a comprehensive inspection through a dilapidation report and building condition assessment.
The staff rest area has also been upgraded to provide a more comfortable, conducive and private environment.
The State Assembly’s gallery has been refurbished and renamed the Visual Heritage Gallery. It showcases the history and contributions of Penang assembly members who served between 1959 and 2026.
A dedicated officers’ room has also been established and equipped with workplace facilities, including printing facilities and audio-visual equipment.
“At the same time, the State Assembly meeting room has been upgraded to accommodate up to 25 people at any one time, while the special media room has also been improved to provide greater convenience for media personnel covering the proceedings,” Law said.
Further upgrading works will be carried out after the current Assembly sitting adjourns. These include the construction of a toilet for persons with disabilities near the guard post, equipped with appropriate facilities and amenities.
The storeroom will also be redesigned to ensure that Assembly goods and equipment can be properly maintained and stored in an orderly manner.
“The upgrading of facilities at the Penang State Legislative Assembly building reflects an ongoing commitment to ensuring the comfort, welfare and operational efficiency of the Assembly’s proceedings,” he said.
The project was undertaken in conjunction with the second meeting of the fourth session of the 15th Penang State Legislative Assembly, which runs from Oct 30 to Nov 6.
