PLUS has recently introduced an open payment system (SPT) at the Penang Bridge toll plaza, enabling users to conveniently pay tolls using MyDebit cards, as well as Visa or Mastercard-branded debit and credit cards.

The integration of debit and credit card payments at the Penang Bridge toll plaza has been a long-awaited development. Efforts to implement this payment method began in 2018 with the PLUS RFID initiative. However, this project faced opposition from CIMB, the parent company of Touch ‘n Go (TNG), resulting in legal disputes. Eventually, in late 2019, an agreement was reached, with TNG RFID becoming the primary RFID system for PLUS highways.

In March 2023, Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi identified the Penang Bridge as one of five highways slated to support SPT. Initially planned for activation by September 2023, the implementation was later delayed until the end of the year to allow for further evaluation by PLUS. Finally, on March 15, 2024, the highway concessionaire officially announced the commencement of credit and debit card payments at the Penang Bridge on a trial basis.

Similar to existing payment methods such as TNG cards and RFID, Penang residents, as well as commuters and students in the state, can apply for a 20% discount on toll payments at the Penang Bridge when using debit and credit cards. This discount is applicable to Class 2 and Class 3 vehicles, including cars, 3-wheeled commercial vehicles, motorcycles with sidecars, lorries, vans, and buses with two axles and four wheels.

To qualify for the discount, applicants must provide various supporting documents, including a copy of the Vehicle Ownership Certificate, in addition to being Malaysian citizens. Applications can be submitted through the Jimat di Penang portal.

The activation of the SPT at the Penang Bridge toll plaza marks a significant step forward in enhancing payment options for commuters, offering greater convenience and flexibility. With the trial phase underway, users can expect smoother transactions and improved accessibility, ultimately contributing to a more seamless travel experience for all.
