Penang: CM expresses concern over security in Rohingya refugee areas

PENANG has conveyed its concerns to the police over the security conditions in localities where the Rohingya refugee community resides in the state.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow urged the police to monitor such settlements to prevent undesirable activities from mushrooming.

He received assurance from newly appointed Penang Chief police Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng and his entourage, who paid a courtesy call on the state's top executive here.

Chow said the state was relaying concerns expressed by the communities in Penang over the seemingly uncontrolled presence of Rohingya here.

Complaints have emerged over the alleged social ills triggered by the Rohingya here.

Lim said that the police force remains committed to ensuring that the safety and security in the state are upheld, including public order.

Accompanying Lim were state Special Branch director Zakaria Abd Rahim, state CID deputy director (intelligence/operations) Mohammad Rusli Mat, Crime Prevention and Community Safety division head Helmi Aris and the state management division director Baeyah Abdul Wahab.

Lim was also appreciative when Chow informed him that the local authorities had installed up to 1,500 CCTVs throughout the state. - June 30, 2026.
